Fumito Udea's craftsmanship and vision are like none other in this industry, and we desperately need to see his games, as they were originally constructed, brought over to PC for the sake of preservation. All his titles are rethinks about game design, and not forward thinking in their philosophy, but ground breaking. We need his games available in perpetuity on modern hardware and I really hope we see GoG take on the monumental task of getting them to PC.
Shadow of the Colossus in particular stands out as it was the first title from Ueda I bought(played the ICO demo disc but didn't play the full game until much later), and it really blew my mind in terms of how one could construct an 'open-world' game. It took a vast empty world with no enemies, no collectibles, no side quests, and made it compelling to explore through its expert focus on geography design. It made the world interesting to explore simply by making a landscape that pulled you in different directions with clever landmarking, strong visuals, and intriguing horizon lines.
It's something that blows me away to this day, since I see so many open world games completely fail on building an interesting landscape to explore. Spent well over a hundred hours in this game as a kid not just doing time attacks and climbling the temple, but just walking the land poking my head into every nook and cranny of the map out of sheer curiosity, wondering constantly if there was some little alcove or cave secretly tucked away somewhere.
One of my favorites. Really hope GoG can make some magic happen by bringing it and the rest of Ueda's titles to PC.
